In a media stand-up in Gisborne today, it was confirmed that two people have died in a plane crash near Wairoa this morning. Their next-of-kin have been notified and work is underway to retrieve the bodies and formally identify them.
Police received a call at 9.07am in relation to a reported aircraft crash in Hangaroa, near Wairoa.
Shortly after 9am, electricity supply was lost to Gisborne East Coast region, affecting the 20,000 connections which supply the entire population of the area.
It has also been confirmed that, due to extensive damage, power will not be restored until tomorrow afternoon at earliest. People are also reminded to treat all wires as live for safety reasons.
The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed.
