Te Arawa kapa haka regionals get underway in Rotorua

By Heeni Brown

Ngati Rangiwewehi Pakeke 1 have been preparing for the Te Arawa Senior Kapa Haka regional competitions.

They consist of kapa haka stalwarts and further iwi icons alike. And although they're a support group, they know too well that in order to get six groups to Te Matatini they need to fully comply with the rules and regulations, just as much as everyone else.

Other than your haka stars, there are some Hollywood stars expected to hit that Te Arawa stage as well this weekend.

There are four groups from Te Arawa who stood at the last Te Matatini, Te Mātārae I Ōrehu, Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao, Ngā Uri o Te Whanoa and Kataore are the teams returning to the regional stage, that doesn't mean you're easily guaranteed a spot back to Te Matatini.

21 groups are expected to hit the stage over the course of the weekend, and 18 judges will determine who will go to Te Matatini, but the decision isn't reliant on theirs alone. Groups still need to comply with the rules, if that doesn't happen we may not see six teams going to Te Matatini in Christchurch next year.
