Rerewhakaaitu maintain healthy enviroment

By Mere McLean

The small community of Rerewhakaaitu were acknowledged by the Ministry of Environment for making the finals of the Green Ribbon Awards.

Although they didn't win the award, their farm lead environmental initiative has helped change attitudes.

Project Rerewhakaaitu was born out of the need to maintain a healthy environment and better farming ethics.

For the Onepū Farm Trust who affiliate to Ngāti Rangitihi, that's what they had to do.

According to Barney Veroce, “Were long term land owners and in this case long term farmers so were here, were kaitiaki of this land and we want to be able to pass it on in a equally good state if not better.”

The project helped farmers engage with environmental issues and establish stronger relationships.

For the community of Lake Rerewhakaaitu, they want to ensure the land and water of their community are healthy for the next generation.
