From the shores of Tauranga Moana, the group brought forth the historic battle of Pukehinahina in their last regional performance. Today they focused on the chaos that impacts on their livelihood, their beloved moana.
The rōpū, based in Tauranga Moana, was founded in 1994 by Awanui Black and Jack Thatcher.
After nearly 20 years of working towards qualifying for Te Matatini, Tūtara Kauika made their debut on the national stage at Pūtaringamotu last year. The Battle of Pukehinahina was the core of their performance on the national stage.
Their head kaiako is Teraania Ormsby-Teki, and tutors Maia Wharekura and Kiharoa Nuku, and today the group is led on stage by Maia Wharekura (male leader) and Meremaihi Aloua (female leader).
Today, Tūtara Kauika ki Rangataua perform for us their Haka.
