A 59 year old man has died after being hit by a train in South Auckland.

According to Police the man was hit while walking north towards the Papatoetoe Railway station when he was struck by the North Freight Train.

According to Northern Communications Shift Commander, Inspector Tony Wakelin, the experience was extremely traumatising for all involved, particularly the Train Driver who has been offered Victim Support.

Train passengers and other morning commuters were redirected to busses for transport and police say there will be severe delays with trains in the area as they have cordoned off and are continuing to examine the scene.
