Māoridom mourns loss of beloved community leader

Family members and the wider community are mourning the loss of Eru Thompson a beloved, active and strong member of his community who passed away yesterday.

Mr Thompson was a powerful voice for his people and his tireless efforts to help strengthen his community and help those in need will always be remembered.

He was also an acknowledged historian and tohunga of Waikato/Tainui, and was sought after throughout Tāmaki Makaurau for his sage advice, wisdom and knowledge.

His expertise led him to be part of the delegation that officially opened Māori Television, alongside the mother of the Māori King Tuheitia, the late Te Arikinui, Te Atairangikaahu. 

Eru Thompson will lie in state at Makaurau Marae. His funeral is expected to be this Saturday, at 11am, and he will be buried at Pukaki Urupā.
