Native Affairs - Teacher Racism

By Mihingarangi Forbes

When Māori researcher Hana Turner set out to survey teacher's expectations of Ethnicity and the achievement gap she was shocked at the racist attitudes of some teachers.

Comments made to her by teachers about Māori include, "Parents werent interested in in their children’s education and many Māori had criminal tendencies and would probably end up in jail."

The views have led many to ask how Tauira Māori can ever achieve excellence when their teachers hold such beliefs. Joining Mihingarangi Forbes is researcher Hana Turner and from Wellington the president of the PPTA Angela Roberts.
