NEW CUP, NEW BLOOD ON NGĀTI NRL!
The show that gets up close to the hits, the tries and the lives of young players as they strive for NRL glory. A new supercharged NGĀTI NRL is back on Māori Television, Thursdays at 8.00 PM.
NGĀTI NRL follows the fortunes of this country’s most talented young league players. Away from their friends and families and living across the ditch, they’ve all sacrificed home comforts to chase the dream – no less than their very own NRL contract. To do that they’ll have to prove themselves against hundreds of other young hopefuls, and this show follows them through the highs, lows and sheer hard work to make that dream a reality.
Keeping it fresh is the name of the game this series, as NGĀTI NRL features a new cup - and hot new talent. The inaugural Toyota Youth Cup is a feeder competition into first grade, and a fast track to higher honours.
New to the show is Manly second-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Te Arawa , Ngāti Kahungunu). Jared moved to Australia on a golf scholarship when he was 14, then traded his clubs for a footy ball. At just 19 those in the know say he’s got ‘star’ written all over him, and compare him with Sonny Bill Williams. Will he live up to expectation when he squares off against the likes of James Tamou, Sioeli Makaui and a host of other Māori and Pacific talent in the Toyota Cup?
The new blood continues with Joelin Rapana (Ngāti Toa), a monster winger with the Gold Coast Titans. One of 10 children from a Mormon family, Joelin was already making his name as a hot property when he took two years off to do missionary work for his church. Now he’s back – will he secure a first grade spot with the Gold Coast Titans? Watch and see!
Familiar faces also make a welcome return to the new series. Among them is Parramatta Eel, Rulon Nutira (Ngāi Tahu, Tongan), pictured, who has made captain this year – just reward for a blockbusting 2007. But will the strain of being away from his twin baby daughters and beautiful partner affect his game?
The Brisbane connection continues for Aoterangi Herangi (Ngāti Mahunga, Ngāti Mahuta, Tainui), a former member of the Warriors development side who made the move to Wynnum Manly Seagulls, a feeder club to the Broncos. Named the coaches’ player of the year in 2008, time is running out if Aoterangi wants to secure an NRL contract. Will this year be his time to shine?
Bone-crunching game footage combines with heart-felt personal stories – NGĀTI NRL is an insider’s view for the folks back home into these young men’s lives, and the cut-throat world of elite sport.
