New Sports Quiz Show Debuts On Maori Television

The ultimate sports comedy showdown comes to Maori Television in the brand new sports quiz show HEAD 2 HEAD, premiering on Thursday, May 2 at 8.00pm.

The fast-paced series brings together sports nut Te Arahi Maipi, comedian Mike King, The Rock FM host Leah Panapa and Silver Fern Kayla Cullen in a half hour of fun the whole family can enjoy.

Over 26 episodes, Te Arahi Maipi and Mike King will captain two teams as they battle it out to answer sports-related questions and win $1000 for a different grassroots sports club each week.

No-nonsense quiz master Leah Panapa will be ready with the whistle to keep the teams in line, throwing questions at them as they go at it round after round; while Kayla Cullen heads out into the community as HEAD 2 HEAD’s roving reporter.

Associate producer Mark Ihaia says the show is about the jokes and the laughs as much as it is about the sports.

“It’s not just for sports buffs; we have a sports star and an entertainment personality on each team, so there will be lots of funny, witty banter,” he says.

From deciphering a morphed photo of two sports personalities to karaoke, each team will be tested on their sports knowledge in entertaining ways.

“We’ve tried to keep our teams on their toes with the games, while at the same time giving them the chance to have a bit of a laugh,” says Ihaia.

Each team will play for a chosen sports team or club that has entered via the HEAD 2 HEAD Facebook page.

“This is our point of difference,” says producer and team captain Te Arahi Maipi.

“Most grassroots clubs are always fundraising for gear, travel and fees, and HEAD 2 HEAD helps them out. It’s a show with heart.”

Sports clubs can post a story or upload a video on the HEAD 2 HEAD Facebook page explaining why they deserve the $1000 prize.

HEAD 2 HEAD premieres Thursday, May 2 at 8.00pm, kicking off a night of sports on Maori Television with the new season of CODE starting at 8.30pm and HUNTING AOTEAROA at 9.30pm.
