Chief Executive Officer
Paora Maxwell is the Chief Executive Officer for Māori Television. With more than 25 years of broadcasting experience in senior management, directing and producing roles, he joined Māori Television in May 2014.
Previously, Mr Maxwell worked for Television New Zealand, where he served as part of the senior executive team as the General Manager of Māori and Pacific Programmes. This included roles as the Executive Producer for landmark shows such as WakaHuia, Marae Investigates, Te Karere, Tagata Pasifika and FRESH.
Starting in the industry as a trainee director for Television New Zealand’s children and Māori programmes, Mr Maxwell soon moved to producing TV programmes. After being awarded the Nuffield Scholarship to the United Kingdom, he set up his own production house. As an independent producer over 15 years, he has produced hundreds of hours of Māori programming for the country’s television networks including Television New Zealand, TV3, Sky TV and Māori Television.
Mr Maxwell has deep industry and governance experience in Māori television broadcasting. A founding executive member of Ngā Aho Whakaari, the Māori Producers Group, he served as the chairperson for two years. He has also served on Aotearoa New Zealand’s Te Māngai Pāho (Māori Broadcasting) Advisory Group and is a former board member of Te Putahi Pāoho, the Māori Television Electoral College.
Mr Maxwell holds a bachelor of science degree, majoring in physiology, from the University of Otago, New Zealand. His tribal affiliations are primarily from the Te Arawa confederation and he has links to Ngāti Awa, Tūhoe, Ngāti Whātua and Ngāi Tahu. On his mother's side, he is Ngāti Pākehā.
