John Tamihere

Ngāti Porou, Whakatohea and Tainui (Te Pūtahi Paoho appointment)


Hon John Tamihere was appointed to Māori Television’s board in March 2016.  He is a former Member of Parliament (1999-2005) and served as a Labour Government Cabinet minister from August 2002-November 2004. John has arts and law degrees from the University of Auckland and has worked as a lawyer for the Māori Land Court and the Department of Māori Affairs.

He is the Chief Executive of the Waipareira Trust, which provides health and education services to Māori in the Auckland Region. He is a Mataawaka member of the Independent Māori Statutory Board and has been the chairman of the New Zealand Māori Rugby League Board.

John has been a high profile campaigner on behalf of urban Māori who have lost their iwi and tribal links. 

Born, raised and educated in Auckland he has also been a television and radio show host and also ran for the Waitakere City mayoralty in 2007.

John has broad experience including broadcasting, governance and executive leadership.
